His artistic activity started with painting. After travelling to New York on a Fulbright grant (1985), he began to work with holography. The exhibition “Painting, Iron and Light” (Madrid, 1989), marked a new direction that was consolidated when moved to London, where he began to collaborate with holographers such as Mike Medora, Nigel Robiette and Caroline Palmer, with whom he made the holosculpture What do you Think? (Benjamin Rhodes Gallery, London, 1989). In 1990, he received the New York Pollock-Krasner Foundation grant.
“The Appearance of Reality—The Reality of Appearance” forms the narrative thread of a series of works (photography, video, holograms installation...) created by Buitrago during the last fifteen years. A reflection on the thin separating the real and the unreal, the subtle barrier between what we know and what we do not know, between what reality reveals and what it hides from us. Like his installations: Throwing it Down the Drain (Battersea Arts Centre, London, 1995), Geometry ( Veado Room, Natural History Museum, Lisbon, 1998), Guise- Disguise (‘’Tentaciones’ ESTAMPA, Madrid, 1999), the series Nobody-Nadie (Madrid, 2001) and Sustainable-Unsustainable, carried out with a Residence Grant at the Centre for the Holographic Arts (New York, 2004, a project funded by the Shearwater Foundation), “Nadie es nadie” (MEIAC de Badajoz, ZKM de Kalsruhe, Alemania e Instituto Tomie Ohtake, Sau Paulo 2008-09). His last installation, Where is the way?, was exhibited at Pabilion 28 - Hospital Julio de Matos, Lisbon 2009 and at La Mosquera’s Palace, Avila 2010.
In parallel to these projects, Pepe Buitrago has developed several holopoetry works —such as the book 20th Century (London, 1991), the series Tone of Voice and Time (Ciudad Real, 2006)—as well as photographic works with holograms, like the serie “From what does not exist” (Madrid, 2007), in he plays with language and with the immaterial and apparent depth of holographic elements y the serie “Disfunctional landscape” (Madrid 2012)
The titles that he gives his works are words devoid of rhetoric, questions posed to the viewer, with clever puns, and it is the visitor who has to find his own answer, since all are valid, maybe even infinite.

A reflection made of our times, our society and our technology, with which Buitrago has managed a contemporary work in every sense.
